RE: Winnebago Era

Quote:
"To the best of my knowledge, ONLY Airstream and Xplorer are building a Sprinter with the original steel shell on a 3500 chassis. I quite like the new Airstream and am looking forward to being able to see one."
Does anyone know if the above is true regarding the Xplorer on a 3500 chassis? The web site shows a 2004 / 2005 model Sprinter and the copywright date for the site is:( Copyright © 2005 Xplorer Motor Home) Does the Xplorer really exist?

RE: MB Cruiser 2500 Sprinter/Diesel

cat7,
If you originate a new post for your questions then you'll probably have additional responders. Tell the group what type of travel and for how long you think that your trips will be. If you intend to travel for a week or two as opposed to extended trips or even full-time then you'll have different needs.
There are many members who have done whatever you intend to do! (within reason) You'll get lots of very good ideas.

RE: New B------has anyone checked out the "krystal"

Oh yes, I do stand corrected.
Although not on the Krystal website, McMahon's is a dealer. I talked to Brett Kirkland who sold their first unit. He said that the unit was the best quality he has ever seen in a "B" coach and it is "Just gorgeous". He’s sending me a brochure and tells me that more pictures are available on the McMahon web site but I haven’t looked yet.

RE: New B------has anyone checked out the "krystal"

If so, why not have an operable contact link or a real picture on the internet? It still seems a little strange to me. I did search the site a little more and found the following (although not on the "home", "contact" (no page) or "about us" pages:
Krystal Enterprises
2701 E. Imperial Hwy
Brea, Ca 92821
Phone: (714) 986-1200

RE: New B------has anyone checked out the "krystal"

Just an aside:
The "contact" link on the website does not work.
The exterior photo suggests that no prototype exists.
The interior pictures look as if they are "borrowed" from elsewhere.
Just my observations.

RE: Anybody cannibalize a truck camper for a DIY B?

Just another idea in a sea of them:
Look for a totaled newer unit since the remains will be totaled anyway. A travel trailer or truck camper with appliances less than a year or two old will surely save many busted knuckles and x*x*x* words during your "appliance replacement" fun.
Totaled units are very inexpensive also.

what do you think?
Without seeing it up close and personal hard to tell. I have 2 questions. 1) What is the fit & finish like. (need to see to know) 2) What is the price.
For $100,000 +/- you know what you are getting with a PW/RT/GW/LTV. If the sales price of the Krystal is close to the PW/RT/GW/LTV then I'd stick with one of those four.
Run, don't walk to a PW/RT/GW/LTV dealer!

RE: MB Cruiser 2500 Sprinter/Diesel

Gee whiz, you folks with 2005 models make me wish that I waited. My '04 has a 12 volt frig., microwave oven (no convection) and one very small lp tank (4.8 gal.). Due to the 12 volt only frig. and my entertainment toys I have three AGM Group 31 battreies. Oh, did I mention that I also have no flat screen TV? The TV cabinet is now a linen closet as we use the Laptop in lieu of a TV.

RE: MB Cruiser 2500 Sprinter/Diesel

O.K., There are two of us in the WORLD! Seriously, FR only built a limited number of the units and therefore it just seems lonely. I purchased mine new in 2004 on a 2003 chassis.. The Sprinter van can be serviced by any Dodge dealer that is authorized and / or Freightliner dealers. All components used in the MB Cruiser are generic RV industry items and can usually be serviced by any reputable RV service dealer. I’ve had no problems with service or warranty work done by Forest River and Dodge / Freightliner dealers and also component repair by RV dealers. The compressor motor in the roof-top A/C unit was defective and repaired by an authorized Duo-Therm (Dometic) service center as was the tank sending units. Forest River quality control and fit / finish are not the best. I must say that Forest River did not quibble about necessary warranty work. FR actually picked the unit up in Delaware by flat bed truck, took it to the factory, made a large number of repairs and then returned it by flat bed truck. FR made the pick-up and return service twice! Everything was corrected and they actually repaired / serviced several things that I had not requested. I give a thumbs-up to the new owner, Warren Buffet. If you have any specific questions or concerns then feel free to send an email.

RE: Water carriers

We travel in a Sprinter based “B”, so space is limited. The solution that works for us is two fold. First, we never use the fresh water tank for drinking water as that is used to fill the garden sprayer. Drinking water is carried in two 5 gal. Plastic water bottles on the rear bike tray along with two 5 gal. Diesel cans. Inside, we use 15 three-liter cranberry juice bottles with the handles. That gives us over 21 gal. which lasts the two of us for 10 days of boon docking. The coach water tank is 26 gal. and the hot water heater is 6 gal. and lasts for 10 days also. The way that is accomplished is by using a pressurized water sprayer (garden type) for everything. We flush the toilet, wash dishes, hands, hair and bodies and if hot water is needed then a liter of boiling water is added to the sprayer. If you have young children or teenagers for that matter then this will probable not work and in fact it would be easier to just shoot yourself. That child tirade being said, we save on water heating as one liter on the stove is all that is needed for a high pressure hot shower which uses only 1 gal. for me and 1.5 gal. for my bride. The toilet and dish washing uses only 10% as much water as the RV system. Getting comfortable with this set-up was not hard once we realized that the nearest water supply was thirty miles away. We also carry a “Sweet Water” water purification system that will allow us to use just about any available natural source of water. We’ve only used it in Europe so far and it’s 15 years old! By the way, if the sun is shining then we can put the sprayer (it’s dark green) in the sunshine and have solar heated water in about two hours.

RE: Oh the Pain: Bibliophile must let go. Share Your Pain.

Susan,
Make a "deal" with a friend / family member that has a S&B abode with a library in a location that you will return to occassionally (home base for residency?)to display and enjoy your many years of love and devotion. Then you may "visit" with the adoptive parents and treasures when you are in town.

RE: Roadtrek RS 08 problem

Roger,
$270.00 and a little work (see my previous post) and your RT will be 15 degrees cooler in the same sunshine. My MB Cruiser was and the AC was set on medium.

RE: Roadtrek RS 08 problem

My lovely bride just told me that I had notes as to inside temperature for our 2006 trip in the MB Cruiser. So here are the actual test results in the Desert heat.
Outside, strong sun, 102 degrees, inside 74 degrees = difference 28 degrees
Outside, partly cloudy, 100 degrees, inside 70 degrees = difference 30 degrees

RE: Roadtrek RS 08 problem

The A/AC issue seems to be ever present with all types of RV units. I have a '04 Forest River MB Cruiser which is mostly white except for the side decals. If cajunsparks unit is one the has a darker paint scheme than that is the first strike against a cool interior. Solar gain from a dark surface is many times that of a reflective surface (white). That being said, I have made several modifications to my unit that have helped enormously. First I purchased the commercially produced windshield and door insulated and silver reflective suction cup attached covers. I added several additional suction cups to eliminate as much convection behind the covers as possible. I intend to add Velcro strips along the tops of all three covers to eliminate convection entirely. (for those of you who are experienced with solar heating, the covers were as initially installed performing like a Trombe wall http://www.aspencore.org/sitepages/pid67.php)
The other modifications which make a big difference whether cooling or heating the unit are home made. Covers that fit into all other window frames are made from one inch foam and silver fabric to reflect solar rays. I used ironing board cover fabric as it is highly reflective and waterproof. (It also matches the windshield and front door window covers). Covers for both vents fashioned from the same material with 1.5 inch foam and attached by Velcro strips. (Just hold your hand beneath the closed vent when the sun is striking to see the gain from this source). The interior exposed metal wheel wells are also covered with glued one inch foam.
Now to the results when parked in the sun. In Baltimore with an outside temperature of 98 degrees and humidity north of 90 percent and in the Desert Southwest with temperatures of 95 to 105 (sorry I do not do 115 degrees)during the day being the test. With the standard 11,000 btu Duo-Therm unit, the inside temperature will maintain under 80 degrees and in the shade who knows as 75 degrees ( my comfort zone) was not a problem.
P.S. When it's super hot, I do not operate the hot water heater, turn on the stove, etc.

RE: Rolling with Refer - Propane or DC?

A three way refrigerator does not have a compressor. The 12 volt setting uses a 12 volt heating element in place of the propane flame as the energy source for cooling. (I won't go into the physics of the system here).
A refrigerator using the above on 12 volt heater probably uses ten times the amps as a 12 volt compressor model refrigerator.
Therefore, when driving there should be no problem with the alternator providing adequate amperage. I would switch to propane almost immediately after turning off the engine. The propane usage for refrigeration is quite small so it is not a large issue.
Conclusion: Either way you want to do it!

RE: Ohhh Pleasure Way..You failed us all

Charles oh Charles,
The "demand" in () means if the request does not work to (demand). Sorry that you did not get that little item. Reality is reality and nothing will change the fact that sometimes after your request does not bear fruit that it will be necessary to demand that the correct course of action be taken. I did say "sometimes", so cut me a little slack, Thanks
